About Birds of Tokyo song “Weekend”
Birds of Tokyo are an alternative rock band hailing from one of the most isolated places on earth, Western Australia. For those who aren’t familiar with them, their breakout success came with their debut album Day One reaching number 3 on the AIR Independent Charts and spending the next 36 weeks in the Top Ten spot.
Since then, Birds Of Tokyo have released hit after hit. Weekend, having recently been released on November 20, 2020, is sure to be no exception. With its summer-y, chill out acoustic guitar vibe combined with the soaring vocals of singer Ian Kenny. We have a hit on our hands and pretty sure every Birds of Tokyo fan is going to know it (if they don’t already).
Birds of Tokyo Weekend Lyrics
I had a dream today, we ran away
And headed for a land
Where the days belong
To never makin’ plans
We need an ocean view, something new
Escape is on our mind
And there ain’t ever gonna be a better time
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
Out here on the west coast with my friends
We ain’t got no worries
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
We gotta take it south, tune it out
Forget about the strеss
I know it’s hard to find
A minute just to rest
Trying to make еnds meet five days a week
Escape is on our mind
And there ain’t ever gonna be a better time
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
Out here on the west coast with my friends
We ain’t got no worries
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
All I wanna do is swim the blue
Lie upon the sand
I wanna feel alive
I wanna see that light
Where the ocean meets the sun to sleep
A golden kiss good night
Well you ain’t ever going to see a better sky
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
Out here on the west coast with my friends
We ain’t got no worries
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
Out here on the west coast with my friends
We ain’t got no worries
Waitin’ for the weekend to begin
What’s the general feeling of Weekend?
Clocking in at a modest 2 min 46 seconds, Weekend quickly asserts itself as a hit in the making. It’s an easily digestible track worthy of the Top 40 charts. Though, regrettably with Birds Of Tokyo’s tendency to strive for the nexts hit single, I feel this songs leaves some of the OG Birds of Tokyo fans behind.
Don’t get me wrong. Weekend by Birds Of Tokyo is a fun little pop rock diddy. However, that’s just the problem, isn’t it? It strives to be little more than a clone of Morgan Evans’ Day Drunk. Chilled out summer vibes are all you’ll find here. Which is fine, if that’s all you’re after.
Weekend by Birds Of Tokyo does nothing to celebrate the alternative rock nuances of earlier releases. It’s a stark contrast to Day One or their self titled album. However, contrast isn’t always a good thing. Weekend runs the risk of alienating the Birds Of Tokyo fanbase by sacrificing smart alternative rock songwriting for this. Whatever this is. It’s good for Pop sake but this isn’t the Birds Of Tokyo I know.
Weekend by Birds Of Tokyo is a case of “I wish they’d go back to the drawing board.” Weekend lacks imagination, is dull and begs for dollars to be thrown at it. I look forward to Virgin Airlines using it for their next ad campaign. To the seasoned Bird of Tokyo fan, Weekend fails with authority.
