Sabrina Season 4 No More
With the recent release of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – Season 4. A certain chill factor is sweeping the world as Millions of Netflix Subscribers tune in for the Greg Berlanti-verse cover song of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. A song that has been played for the last time to the surprise of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina fandom who fell in love with Kiernan Shipka‘s portrayal from Day 1.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Cancelled
I’m not sure which is more upsetting to a TV show fan: knowing a TV show is coming to an end or being unjustly robbed of a Cliffhanger Conclusion due to Hollywood Executive meandering. The answer, although skewed in favour of this article, rules on the side of knowing a show is coming to a close.
There’s opportunity for closure, to tie up loose ends, to create a sense of finality to the last few years a show has graced the small screens of the world. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tried to “bring it home” as much as it could given the constraints of finalising a well-loved show in only 8 hour long episodes. How do you sum up the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – a show featuring a character that’s been loved for decades – when you only have 8 hours to play with?
Given the cards dealt, the writers did an exceptional job, with one footnote that the ending felt slightly rushed. Despite all this, Sabrina Season 4 looked and felt exactly as it should. Sabrina Spellman wrapped in a cute little goth bow.
Sabrina Spellman Vs Sabrina Morningstar
At the end of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3, we were introduced to a spell, courtesy of Ms Spellman to solve the quandary of needing to constantly divide her time between Earth and Hell. Resulting in a double or twin Sabrina Spellman to take on the mantle that Lucifer Morningstar had preordained his daughter to take on, as Queen of Hell. Aka Sabrina Morningstar.
With Sabrina Season 4 came the Big Bad in the form of The Eldritch Terrors. 8 ancient beings charged with the destruction of, and plunging the world into utter darkness. A plan is formulated, with the aid of Twin Sabrina Morningstar, because Two Witches are better than one. Right?
What follows is the two Sabrina’s battling for the survival of all creation as the Final Eldritch Terror, the Void, gets closer to Earth and causes realities to crash into one another. When its revealed that only one Sabrina can exist in each reality, Sabrina Morningstar leaves to head to another reality. A dark, maniacal micro-dimension where the Original Aunts of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (portrayed by Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea), inhabit under the twisted guise of filming a never-ending Sabrina TV show.
The Sabrina Spellman Legacy
Chilling Sabrina of Sabrina Season 4, Episode 7 mixed the dark coming of age story of Sabrina Spellman with the hallmark feel good diddies of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. That’s because the original Aunts make a triumphant return as alternate dimension versions of themselves. A fun episode that through out homage after homage to what was right and what was an ‘oh so campy’ 90s sitcom.
Yet somehow it fit. In a dark mirror universe meets Black Mirror sort of way. The idea that actors, actresses, set-designers and crew can work tirelessly to be slaves to a worn out system was an interesting narrative. A narrative that expanded on the idea that Directors, in the days of old, would constantly remind their talent that “everyone is replaceable.”
So replaceable that those who don’t play ball in this mirror universe get grinded up and repurposed into a tin of cat food? Sure. It somehow works. While a great nostalgic point for the show, it legitimises the efforts of Melissa Joan Hart era Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Sabrina and Harvey
The mechanics behind the interpersonal relationships of Sabrina and her Scooby Gang went on to surprise me, not to mention the ongoing charm, all throughout Sabrina Season 4.
While essentially teenagers and having to deal with the usual stereotypes of hormones, sex, rebellion, and the list goes on. The maturity of Harvey Kinkle and Sabrina having to deal with one another on a friends basis, despite subtle feelings bubbling at the surface, was a masterful approach.
Where a writers room of lesser gumption would have gone for the easier route of Harvey and Sabrina/Harvey and Sabrina/Harvey and Sabrina throughout Seasons 1-4. We instead have two people who were in a previous relationship together that have to learn and grow beyond their station, for not only their sakes, but for the sakes of their friends and everyone around them.
My Harvey is definitely Ross Lynch.
Which is the strangest sentence this 35 yr old man could ever write.
Vale Sabrina The Teenage Witch
Sabrina Season 4 is a dark and adventurous conclusion to the Spell bounding Sabrina Spellman as she puts everything on the line to save her friends from the barrage of attacks, courtesy of the dreaded Eldritch Terrors. The light hearted Scooby Gang quips and gags at Sabrina’s expense are never in short supply. Much like the demonic chants to Satan and his familiars are never shied away from.
As creepy as it is dark and as humorous as it is cute, Sabrina Season 4 is a worthy companion to the rebooted Archie series of Vampironica, Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that popped up in 2016.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4 came to a worthy close. With Sabrina Spellman making the ultimate sacrifice for her friends and family. And a statue raised in her honor, which looked more like a golden silhouette of her Comic Book counterpart, than it did Kiernan Shipka. Legitimising Sabrina Spellman, Kiernan Shipka, Melissa Joan Hart and their Chilling Adventures… past and present.
