Welcome new Batman Comic Book
The future of Batman and Detective Comics comes into sharper focus as DC Comics teases the aftermath of Alfred’s death in Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. #1.
As Tom King brought his epic “City of Bane” story to its thrilling conclusion, the Bat Family suffered a huge loss when Bane killed Alfred. It was a shocking blow that stunned fans, and now in the aftermath of his death Batman is struggling to pick up the pieces. DC Comics has released a preview of how the Bat Family copes with Alfred’s loss in the supersized Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P #1 coming February 12, 2020.
The Bat Family Reflects
Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P. #1 features an all-star lineup of writers and artists coming together to pay tribute to Alfred Pennyworth through the eyes of the Bat Family. Damian, Dick, Barbara, Tim and Jason will make an appearance in the issue, paying their respect with flashbacks to fond memories of the man who was the rock that held the family together.
From the look of the preview pages we’ll also see Selina Kyle and Kate Kane, which means there might be other cameos as well.
Hints at the Future
With Alfred gone, his loss will be felt in both the Batman ongoing comic series as well as Detective Comics.
Batman writer James Tynion IV hints at what’s to come:
“The fabric of Gotham feels like it’s been ripped, and nowhere is that more evident than in Batman’s family. This is an emotional gut-punch of an issue, as the family comes together as they struggle with the loss of the man who held each of them up in their darkest hours, and decide what kind of family they have left, now that its heart has been removed.”
Detective Comics scribe Peter J. Tomasi is looking forward to paying tribute to one of his favorite characters and giving him a proper sendoff:
“It’s been a privilege to write the Bat family for so many years and an even bigger privilege to be a part of giving Alfred, MY second favorite character in the Batman mythology, a salute to his kick-ass service. I’m proud of this special and the new Detective Comics Annual #3 in giving Alfred Pennyworth more moments to shine.”
Make sure to pick up some tissues when you pick up your pull list, because Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P #1 is sure to be a tearjerker!
