Strategy Games Help the Mind
While there are plenty of first-person shooters out there if you like your action a tad more cerebrally challenging there is no better genre than the strategy game. In fact, there are a wealth of these types of games on the market to choose from, and you can find the very best and most fun discussed below.
1. Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2
Something of a classic in the strategy game field, Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is a great place to start. Yes, it is 26 years old, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still jammed packed with strategic fun for both new players, and old-school fans alike.
OK, so some of the graphics aren’t quite up to par with the more modern games, but what this title has got is a whole lot of character and heart. Indeed, where else would you be able to choose between releasing military-enabled dolphins or squid? Play as the Soviet Union or the US, and be sure to give the multiplayer option a try as it’s serious fun.
2. Politics and War
Politics & War is a fairly new kid on the block when it comes to MMO strategy games. Although it most definitely measures up within the genre. The biggest plus point of Politics & War is its create a country game style. That is you get to nurture a country all you own from scratch and control every aspect of it from its politics to its military strategy.
Another boon to playing this game over the others is that it has a thriving community and discord channel surrounding it. Of course, this makes finding people to play with or against a breeze no matter what time of day you hop online. Something that means you can always get the most out of your strategy game experience with Politics and War.
3. Battlestar Galactica Deadlock
Unlike the games mentioned above, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is firmly lodged in fiction, science fiction to be exact. In fact, the aim of this game is to resist the Cylon invasion, while also managing the 12 colonies successfully. Indeed, this is no mean feat, as Adama knew only too well.
The thing that sets Battlestar Galactica Deadlock apart from its contemporaries is that it is not strictly a real-time strategy game. Instead, the mechanic works to allow both sides to act at the same time, which provides an interesting twist. Expect to be tested on your political machinations, fleet building, and resource management in this fun yet challenging game.
4. Star Trek Fleet Command
Also solidly within the science fiction space, Star Trek Fleet Command is great for folks hoping to live out their prime directive fantasy. Explore the galaxy while fighting real-time battles with enemy ships, mining for resources, and claiming more terrain. A dream of a game for strategic Trekkies and fans of the Star Trek Universe alike.
5. Terra Invicta
Last, of all, we have Terra Invicta which is in the pipeline to be released this year. Another space-based title there will be plenty to keep strategy heads occupied here such as setting up a viable economy in space, building a fleet, and managing political and social issues back on earth. Definitely, one to watch out for in the coming months.
