Eat The Rich #1 Review
As the debut issue of Eat The Rich, a new five-issue offering from BOOM! Studios, opens, Joey Dorsey is on her way to meet her boyfriend Astor’s well-to-do family for the first time and attend one of their notorious soirees. As nervous as she is about making a good first impression with her beau’s folks, Joey tries her best to play the supportive girlfriend role as an apprehensive Astor frets about returning home and possibly revisiting some skeletons from his closet.
Not too long after they arrive at Crestfall Bluffs, Joey begins to feel like things aren’t exactly what they seem. She is soon horrified to discover she isn’t attending your typical family get-together.
There are far more chilling implications to the festivities at hand…
The Story of Eat The Rich #1
What impressed me the most about the writing of this book was the dialogue. Hugo Award-winning writer Sarah Gailey gifts readers with verbal exchanges between characters – especially Joey’s interaction with Astor and his family – that read so naturally, giving the characters a sharp, realistic tone. Given the unnatural storyline, that is quite an impressive feat.
Gailey effortlessly creates an ambience that leaves reader with the uneasy notion that sometime somewhere throughout the course of the story something horrible is going to happen. It isn’t about “what if”, it’s all about when… and when it all hits the proverbial fan, the floodgates open for what is bound to be an engrossing five-issue story.
The Artwork of Eat The Rich #1
Accented by Roman Titov’s eye-catching colors, Pius Bak’s artwork brings an almost Gothic feel to the story once the couple reaches their destination. As soon as Joey and Astor arrive at Crestfall Bluffs, every page possesses an eerie, uncertain feel to it, giving the audience a foreboding sense of danger. You see the goings-on through Joey’s eyes with the awareness of something wicked transpiring becoming clearer and clearer with each panel.
Conclusion
Eat the Rich #1 is Meet the Parents, if it were written by Tobe Hooper or Clive Barker. Delightfully disturbing and not what I was expecting to read when I was given this book to review. It isn’t your typical comic book fare and I mean that as a ringing endorsement. I highly recommend this to horror fans looking for something shocking that will leave you wanting for more. Judging by the jaw-dropping first installment, this five-part stories is not going to disappoint readers who make the wise decision to check it out.
