How to read Uncanny X-Men #3

Uncanny X-Men is the very first Marvel comic book that introduced us to the world of mutants and of course the team of the X-Men. While it may have been almost impossible to pick up such an early comic book issue without emptying your life savings, Marvel Comics have made reading this piece of Comics history so easy with their Marvel Comics app called Marvel Unlimited.

Where else can I read Uncanny X-Men #3?

Unfortunately, the Marvel Unlimited app basically holds the monopoly over the entire digital Marvel Comics catalogue. As they advertise having over 28000 readable comics in their App’s database.

However, there are other avenues at your disposal that you can take advantage of. With eBay and Comixology being the most obvious and then there’s your local comic book store. Then there’s the less than scrupulous websites out there which allow you to read comics for free (if the idea of millions of gambling banner ads appeals to you).

Good luck finding a physical copy of this piece of Comic Book History out in the wild. You’re going to need it!

What is Uncanny X-Men #3 about?

What is Uncanny X-Men #3 about

This issue of Uncanny X-Men continues its strange tales about the strangest superheroes on earth. This time billing the star villain, The Blob, as a “super villain unlike any you’ve ever seen before.”

Like all early X-Men comic book issues, Uncanny X-Men #3 kicks off with Professor Xavier instructing his young pupils on ways they can control their mutant powers for the betterment of mankind. Cyclops is testing his optic blasts as Beast continues to load bales of hay into a machine that’s shooting them straight at the young laser eyed mutant. Leaving Iceman little recourse but to act up and starts all sorts of shenanigans which results in a biff with Beast.

Sensing a nearby mutant presence, Xavier orders the mutants to be quiet while he scans the area for the mutant in question. Unable to home in on the exact location of the mystery mutant, Professor Xavier sends the X-Men out to track down the mutant. While, just before the X-Men leave the mansion, an odd panel in this comic book reveals that Professor Xavier is secretly in love with one of his students, Jean Grey. This creates an odd commentary on sexual grooming that we’re not going to go into just now so make your own conclusions.

Eventually, the X-Men come across the mystery mutant at a nearby circus for freaks. The mutant is introduced as The Blob. An overweight, tall, gargantuan mutant who seems to possess immense strength and invulnerability as nothing seems to hurt him. Not even intense heat, ice or even Cyclops’ optic blasts. Initially, the Blob refuses to return back to the Mansion with the X-Men so that he can be tested to see if he is a mutant. However, thanks to his sexual attraction to Jean Grey, the X-Men return home with The Blob so that Professor X can run his tests.

When Professor X makes the determination that The Blob is in fact, a mutant, the X-Men offer him the chance to join them, however, The Blob refuses as he thinks the X-Men are a joke. This deeply offends them and result to assaulting The Blob, who manages to escape, and then makes his way back to the circus where he convinces the circus troop to start following his orders.

The Blob (with his circus followers in tow), heads for the X-Men mansion and they try to besiege the mansion but are thwarted by the X-Men at every turn as it’s the team work of the five mutants which sees them come out on top. Team work which sees The Blob down in a hole (quite literally), allowing the X-Men to deal swiftly with the remaining circus followers and for Professor Xavier to wipe The Blob’s mind of the X-Men’s true identities.
