Frightening Consequences in Specs #2
Yesterday, BOOM! Studios released a first look at Specs – Issue 2. The second issue of this series, Specs is created by writer David M. Booher (Canto, All-New Firefly) and artist Chris Sheehan (House of Slaughter). With colorist Roman Stevens (Batman Fortnite) and letterer Jim Campbell (Giant Days) rounding out this creative team.
Specs is about a group of misfit teens who mail-order a pair of novelty glasses, and realize they’ve received much more than they bargained for.
Given their unwillingness to acknowledge the dangerous consequences of their recent wish, what does this mean for their victim, and what do they do with the glasses moving forward? Kenny fears that all of this may affect his and Ted’s relationship… and wonders if they’ll truly remain just “friends.”
The main cover art is by highly acclaimed artist Skylar Patridge (Trial of the Amazons), and variant cover by fan-favorite illustrator David Talaski (Nightwing). Me personally? I’m going to pick up the variant cover by David Talaski. It is full on nostalgia and reminds me of an early 80s movie poster. Think Teen Wolf.

First Impressions of Specs #2
With the combined talents of artist Chris Sheehan and Roman Stevens there’s a distinct impression on driving towards a noir-80s theme. While it greatly upsets me classify the 80s as noir, the colour palette of the panels on pages 1 through to 5 screams nostalgia. An aspect of this comic which fans will feel immediately pulled towards.
Jim Campbell’s lettering complements the style and evocative emotion of David M. Booher’s – one that blends a sense of danger, adventure and the usual freak outs that teenagers will feel when thrown into uncomfortable situations. If the first 5 pages are anything to go by you’ll rush out to pick up issue 1 and will be first in line for issues 2, 3, 4, etc.
