In a world of Comics Beat, The Comics Journal, CBR, and all that other riff raff – there seems very little coverage for the working man’s comic book review. The layman and the low brow has long been left by the wayside as academics try to elevate modern silly books to a status of class and superiority. None of which you’ll ever find here – welcome to Comics Reviewed Badly.

A review series where creators names will be spelt wrong, publishers will be referenced as the devil and a final humorous verdict will be left. And no I’m not sorry.

Published by BOOMer! Studios, the latest All New Firefly issue has burdened itself with the troublesome task of establishing Jayne as a good guy – made extremely hard by actor Adam Baldwin – who played Jayne Cobb in the Firefly show and turned out to be a toxic bigot.

Better get your chevron encoded, because in this latest Firefly comic the storyline involves portals which look just like Stargates, continue to direct the decisions of the Firefly crew.

Malcolm Reynolds is useless and has the emotional range of a child. Zoe Washburne kicks ass and controls the situation (as always). While the rest of the Firefly crew are absent, Jayne used his jaw cracking talents to overpower the mercenaries who’ve kidnapped him and a friend. Leaving the opportune moment got both of them to leap through the “definitely not a Stargate” portal.

There’s a lot of wonderful moments in the comic book such as Jayne and friend burying the hatchet and using their collective “bad guy” skills to hand the arses of the universes worst mercenaries back to them. But then there’s the point where they both scale the monastery or whatever the fuck building they’re in to gaze upon the wonderful scenery of the ‘earth that was.’

With everyone safely on the other side of the portal, one of the mercenaries whose been passing secrets to the firefly crew overpowers one of the menacing mercenaries holding a monk at gunpoint. Who is this guy? What does he want? How did he grow such a luscious beard?

Verdict: Jayne is a good guy and Reynolds is fucking useless. Who would’ve guessed? Welcome to this All New topsy turvy Firefly series.
