Creepy Anime and the Characters That Freak You Out!
Horror aspects in anime tend to make some favorite characters and scenes. So it’s pretty common for me to come across anime characters that definitely fit the bill for being “creepy” – from horrific monsters, to obsessed teenage girls, to dudes that really, really make you uncomfortable.
There’s a variety of creeps for everyone on this list of 25 creepy anime characters – some definitely more than others.
Ryuk – Death Note
The Shinigami in general are all fairly creepy to most people. Ryuk is pretty unnerving for many – the unsettling look of his face, with those bulging eyes, and that huge grin, and his massive stature and clawed hands. While I find Ryuk fairly endearing, not everyone can look at him that way. He is a god of death, after all.
Shuu Tsukiyama – Tokyo Ghoul
Known as The Gourmet, Tsukiyama is a ghoul with a particularly… questionable taste, even amongst ghouls. And his current obsession? Ken Kaneki, the main character, of course. There’s just something extra creepy about his character from the moment you’re first introduced to him. Probably the concept of a cannibalistic ghoul.

Edward “Eddie” Mason – Angels of Death
He has a cute yet creepy sort of appeal, similar to that of Sam in Trick r’ Treat. Instantly obsessed with the main character, Rachel, Eddie is one of the main antagonists of the show. He wants to bury Rachel in one of his graves, out of some twisted sort of love, and is frequently seen carrying around his shovel.
The Major – Hellsing
Nothing like a psychotic nazi to give you the creeps, right? There are plenty of characters in Hellsing you could consider creepy – I tossed around the Valentine brothers for this spot, as well – but ultimately settled on the Major. Even thinking about the sound of his voice gives me chills.
Nobuyuki Suguo – Sword Art Online
Less visually creepy and more “this character is such a creep that it gives me knots in my stomach”, Sugou is a villain you can’t wait to see be defeated. His obsession with Asuna is disgusting, and it only gets worse the longer he’s in the show.
Caster – Fate/Zero
There is nothing good that can come from a demented serial killer getting this particular Caster as his servant. They don’t even care so much about the Holy Grail War as much as they do about their “art.” As their body count rises, the other servants realize they need to work together to get rid of Caster – for the sake of more than just the Holy Grail.

Souichi – Junji Ito Collection
Souichi just radiates creep energy from every pore. He always seems to be in the middle of some scheme, plotting against everyone and everything.
Midari – Kakegurui
As soon as she appears, you start to get the creep factor from Midari – and it only gets worse from there. She gambles with life, is obsessed with the student council president, and then eventually Yumeko after they gamble together. If you’ve seen the show, you get it – she’s a little unhinged.
Titans – Attack on Titan
Giant, naked, disproportionate in some way that unnerves viewers – there’s no denying, some of the titans are genuinely creepy. Then consider the fact they could squash you like a bug, or eat you like a tasty treat, and they definitely become creatures you don’t want to exist in the same world as.
Yuno – Future Diary
She seems cute, but Yuno is not only a yandere – she’s a super scary one, in so many ways. Her obsession is deadly, and only made worse by the fact she’s a diary user. It’s hard to cover just how disturbing her character is without diving into spoiler filled plot points, so just trust me when I say Yuno only gets more and more disturbing as she goes on.
Shigaraki – My Hero Academia
A lot of fans have a crush on Tomura Shigaraki. He’s a fan favorite villain. Even I love his character. But there’s no denying, especially when he’s got all hands on deck (heh), he’s a bit creepy. The first time we see him enter on screen, ready to fight, there is something definitely creepy about a dude covered in hands emerging from the darkness.

Isabella and Krone – The Promised Neverland
I couldn’t pick one or the other when it came to these two, because both of them genuinely give me the creeps. Knowing these women can raise these children as their “mother”, only to give them all away as dinner for monsters is absolutely horrifying. Not to mention, as the show plays out, they get progressively more creepy in their tactics to keep everyone in line.
Lil Slugger – Paranoia Agent
Dark, grinning, and baseball bat wielding – Lil Slugger is a living urban legend that ties together many lives in the show. He assaults people, causing a lot of fear in Tokyo, as he skates around, his face hidden beneath his baseball cap, aside from that menacing grin.
Shiro – Deadman Wonderland
As Shiro, she isn’t too creepy. But her alter ego, the Wretched Egg, is a different story. As Shiro, she looks fairly normal and even sweet. But when The Wretched Egg takes over, her eyes are more hooded, and her smile is eerie, almost blood thirsty.
Mahito – Jujutsu Kaisen
A special grade curse, Mahito is one of the main antagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen. Like Shigaraki, he’s developed a fan base. But his sadistic nature, devotion to the King of Curses, Sukuna, and disregard for his own well being if it means accomplishing his goal of irradicating humans and curses ruling the earth makes Mahito’s insanity dangerous, and his existence creepy.
Sachiko Shinozaki – Corpse Party
A main antagonist of the Heavenly Host arc, Sachiko is the Girl in the Red Dress. Armed with scissors, she’s a serial killer that enjoys torture and wants to kill, well, everything. But as if that wasn’t enough, she just looks unsettling. You could easily make her a character in an unrelated horror movie and terrify audiences everywhere with just her creepy appearance alone.
Megumi Shimizu – Shiki
She was once cute, but once she became a shiki, Megumi became more… unsettling. The contrast of her pale skin and her black and red eyes, topped with her general presence, is creepy. She is malicious, vengeful, and violent as a shiki – definitely not a character you want to end up alone with in the dark.
Ai Enma – Hell Girl
Someone called Hell Girl has to be creepy, right? Similar to the last two girls, she’s a creepy young girl. But despite her duties, she’s the protagonist of the story, and the first Hell Girl – after being buried alive, crawling out of her grave, burning alive everyone that was responsible for her tragic death, and attracting the Master of Hell’s attention because of how much hatred she radiated.
Kyubey – Madoka Magica
Looks cute and innocent, so how could Kyubey even be on this list? Answer – you’re looking at the main villain of Madoka Magica. The unchanging expression, eating his own corpse, and pulling souls out of girls… yeah. No thanks.
Gotou – Parasyte
An experiment, Gotou is made up of five different parasites. He is the main villain, and initially looks like a normal human. However, the creepy factor comes in when he transforms into a huge monster, with great skin, multiple eyes, and massive fangs.
Urado – Ghost Hunt
Someone obsessed with Elizabeth Bathory and Vlad the Impaler, prolonging their life, and being a villain of a series never adds up to anything good. Bulging eyes, covered in blood – Urado is definitely a creep.

Monokuma – Danganronpa
Monokuma is my favorite character in the games as well as the show, but it’s entirely based on how much I love this little creepy bear. Almost omnipresent, vicious, and a bit perverted, Monokuma is an agent of Despair and the face of the Ultimate Despair in the killing games.
Himiko Toga – My Hero Academia
Since we have Shigaraki on here, let’s go ahead and toss in one of his underlings – Toga. Her quirk involves ingesting the blood of others to take on their appearance. Once a normal appearing student, Toga snapped one day and became the killer she is now. She obsesses over others, her current fixations on Deku and Uraraka. She loves them. She wants to be them. She wants to kill them.
Mamoru Uchida – Perfect Blue
An obsessed stalker with an unnerving appearance, he’s the main antagonist of Perfect Blue. He stalks Mima, sending threatening letters, and even an explosive. Even without the creepy appearance, just his level of stalking is worthy of landing him on this list.
Lucy – Elfen Lied
Anyone obsessed with getting revenge and exterminating humanity isn’t exactly normal. Lucy may look cute, but she’s responsible for a lot of death, mutilation, torture, and even wanting to commit genocide. She is one of several personalities that reside in one body.
