Milky #2 – What you need to know?
Last issue of Milky, which dropped into our laps almost a year ago, told the story of a Milkman who is faced with the most dire of circumstances. Alien invasion! With a killer scenario like that – it was hard to put Issue #1 down.
Milky #1 focused entirely on effective world building and the individual flavours of the characters. Introducing them with their own blend of situational humour meets British culture with a dash of Armageddon. Shaken. Not stirred.
You’ll be pleased to know that issue #2 doesn’t just concentrate on Milky and his friends. Sure, they’re there. But while Milky and Ghost are planning to get to the ship. The main plot centres on Lucy as she struggles coming to terms with alien abduction, loneliness and pushing aside the advances of Lord Moofu.
A Lucy Story
Milky #2 centres on his love interest, the red headed Lucy, more than it does Milky and his wilful sidekick, Ghost.
In the first issue we witnessed Milky deal a fresh can of justice on to the unsuspecting invaders. The Bomondians, who resemble an aborted mix between Star Wars’ Rancormonster and Farscape’s Halosians. Whose sole mission to rain death and destruction is expanded upon by Lord Moofu. They mean to breed with the women of earth.
This development shocks Lucy to the core. Who has been chosen to be bred with Moofu himself. Imprisoning her in a cell aboard his ship. There she is left to dwell alone with her thoughts. An uneasy prospect when early in the issue she is established as an alcoholic.
The Milky Subplot
Milky and his pal Ghost continue to fend off the invasion of the ravenous Bomondian warriors. Insert humorous quips and accidental repartee. Resulting in the Bomondians having their collective arses handed to them.
The accidental heroes are topped up the efforts of a shotgun wielding foul mouthed granny. Providing them with the inescapable knowledge off the back of her recent abdication: the aliens take the women and eat the blokes.
Giving Milky and Ghost a (hardly) fool proof plan that closes out issue two. The Bomondians need women? Fine. They cross dress their way onto Lord Moofu’s space ship.
Dialogue and Art is King!
The creative team of this issue haven’t changed from the first. Joshua Saxon does a great job with the dialogue in finding a happy medium of comedic narrative, savage brutality and familiar world building.
The contrast of clean penciling and ink work versus the rough exaggeration of the Bomondians definitely works. Gian Fernando’s art personifies the stereotypes of western culture’s perception of monsters. It creates a legitimately terrifying race of otherworldly invaders.
