But Why Tho?
The art doesn’t just deliver on its protagonist, either. The worlds Nahiri passes through and the creatures she faces are as diverse and vibrant as one could ask for. The line work is given extra energy thanks to the wonderful colorwork done by Angolo. The final touch to this book’s presentation is the lettering. Beyond simply giving readers a clear path to follow the story with, Dukeshire does a great job of visually distinguishing when Nahiri is speaking as we do and when she is speaking as the stones do. This visual differentiation makes the two languages feel genuinely different from each.

A good introduction of a new strong character, the writing keeps you guessing and the artwork keeps you mesmerised. Nahiri as a character has the potential to become an integral part of the universe good or bad and I can’t wait to see more.

Comic Book Dispatch
Visually, she’s a stunning character. When she forges a fiery sword out of stone to wield in combat, she takes on an almost Arthurian look, regal and powerful. I don’t want to give away the various surprises in the book. Suffice it to say, it’s a great book for lovers of the Nahiri character or those who know little about her.

Seanan McGuire and Kath Lobo weave the story in Magic: Nahiri the Lithomancer around the major events of Nahiri’s life as established by the stories of the Magic: The Gathering sets in which she’s played a narrative role. The comic focuses on the many years that fill in the gaps between those stories, only alluding to the established milestones. This allows the comic to humanize and develop Nahiri into an interesting and fully formed character—with the soft visuals fitting the interior focus without being too far afield from the established look for Boom’s Magic universe.
