A sneak peek of the Batman #98 and #99 covers coming later this year reveal two very exciting partnerships as Batman fights the nefarious Punchline.
The Joker War is going to crank up the heat in Gotham City this summer, and by September Batman will have some familiar faces coming to help him win the battle.
With Batman #98, Harley Quinn steps in to help Batman in his hour of need. Naturally, Harley is her own agent of chaos and she’s going to use the opportunity to get some frustration out on Joker’s new main squeeze, Punchline. It’s going to be the battle royale for the ages!
According to the press release from DC Comics, Batman is out of commission and Harley has to keep him safe: “Batman is at his most vulnerable following a massive dose of an experimental new Joker toxin, so while the Dark Knight haunted by demons and visions it’s up to Harley Quinn to protect him while he recovers—because Punchline is on her way!”
Then, in Batman #99, Dick Grayson returns to Gotham City. Is this Ric Grayson, or is Dick back for good? Here’s what DC Comics has to say: “Things have changed, as Batman realizes he can’t fight this war alone. He’s going to need help. Before he faces down The Joker, he must call up his trusty partner Dick Grayson! But can Dick reclaim his lost memories in time to join the battle?”
Truth be told, I’ll be very happy to see Dick Grayson fighting alongside his mentor once again. I was very invested in Dick’s Nightwing story when it was in Benjamin Percy’s capable hands, but then Dick got shot and Percy was taken off the title in favor of a long-winded story about Ric Grayson and a trio of Bludhaven cops parading as Nightwings. Dan Jurgens has done an admirable job steering the ship back on course, and hopefully Batman #99 brings the ship into port for good.
Both issues were written by James Tynion IV with art from Jorge Jimenez and covers by Jimenez (#99) and David Finch (#98). Batman #98 will be available September 1 and Batman #99 hits shelves on September 15.
