DC tops Diamond’s Bestseller List

Diamond Comic Distributors announced their bestselling comics and graphic novels of 2019 and once again DC Comics was well represented on the list.

2019 was truly the Year of the Bat as Detective Comics #1000 is named the bestselling comic book of 2019. The milestone was even more special as 2019 was also the 80th anniversary of the Bat. This marks the second year in a row that DC has earned top honors after Action Comics #1000 claimed the top spot in 2018. The 96-page supersized issue was a celebration of the Dark Knight, with stories featuring top writers and artists across the industry.

Tom Taylor’s DCeased #1 took No. 5 on the list. After a virus spawned from the anti-life equation wreaks havoc all over the planet, the Justice League is put to the test as people turn into mindless monsters. The virus spread through technology, turning its victims into killing machines in the blink of an eye. The six-issue miniseries left fans reeling as heroes and villains were taken out by the virus.

DC also claimed five spots on the bestselling graphic novels and trade paperbacks of 2019. Watchmen took the No. 1 spot, followed by Mister Miracle (No. 5), Batman: White Knight (No. 7), Batman: The Killing Joke (No. 9) and Batman: Damned (No. 10).

“These rankings demonstrate how Batman continues to be an important part of our publishing success, in comic books, original graphic novels and collected editions,” said DC Publisher Dan DiDio. “I’m incredibly happy to see how enthusiastically fans responded to Detective Comics #1000, especially during Batman’s 80th anniversary and to be the best-selling comic book two years in a row is a fantastic achievement.”

DC is off to a strong start in 2020 as James Tynion IV takes over Batman in January after Tom King’s epic run. Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, the DC power couple that made Harley Quinn the powerhouse she is today, launch a new Black Label series, Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, in February to accompany the release of the movie. In March, Tom King and frequent collaborators Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner will introduce Strange Adventures, a 12-issue maxi-series.

These are but a few of the exciting things coming in 2020, and it’s safe to say that many of these titles will show up on Diamond’s bestselling list at the end of the year.
